Sexual Obsessions in OCD

Sexual obsessions are quite a common theme in the OCD world. Sexual obsessions range from obsessions around having an affair or your partner having an affair, incest, becoming pregnant from someone else, and other disturbing thoughts that are considered sexually taboo and unacceptable. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list and there are many other sexual themes within OCD that have come up more recently in online forums. Despite the nature of the theme, it’s important to remember that treatment is available.

Groinal Response

Sexual orientation fears may revolve around engaging in an undesirable sexual act, having disturbing images sexual in nature, having a change in sexual orientation, or having sexual contact with a child or family member. Many individuals who experience difficulty with sexual obsessions may even describe feeling a groinal response which brings on more feelings of anxiety when confronted with triggers in the environment. The groinal response may not be limited to stimuli related to the theme, but could also be brought on by random objects as well.

Relationships

Individuals with OCD around sexual obsessions may experience difficulties in their romantic relationships. Some partners may struggle with understanding the condition and may also experience rejection and frustration. OCD patients have often described feeling stigmatized when presenting their concerns to their family members. They may even experience difficulties describing their fears because they seem quite unique and complex. Although it may seem unique and complex, the theme is no different than the other themes we treat at our clinic. What is important to remember is that no matter how taboo the theme is, it is treatable.
